COMBAT A LITTLE EXTRA WEIGHT WITH A LOT OF LOVE

May 4, 2008 – Educational Event For People and Pets in Veterans Park

Englewood, New Jersey, April 11, 2008 –The Englewood Animal Hospital and the City of Englewood Health Department will host an educational program focusing on the correlation between pet and childhood obesity and prevention.

Dr. Robert Groskin, veterinarian at the Englewood Animal Hospital says “Nearly 35 percent, or 54 million pets in the United States are overweight and at serious risk for heart disease, diabetes, arthritis or a shortened life expectancy.

Overweight or obese children range from 5 to 25 percent of children in the United States . Similar nutrition and life style factors lead to obesity in both our pets and our children.” He continues, “This event is meant to offer owners fun ways of preventing pet obesity and options for treating pets that suffer from a few extra pounds. We're thrilled to have local health agencies participating and presenting the community with ways that we can reduce our own extra weight.”

As part of the morning's events, Englewood will host the nationwide pet fitness tour an exhibit sponsored by the Hills pet food company. The PetFit tour, visiting 18 cities in the US , will raise the awareness about the right nutrition needed to improve the quality of life and health risks associated with obesity in our pet population. The tour will give owners an opportunity to receive free fitness assessments and body condition scores for their pets. The Tour provides an interactive exhibit for pet owners to see and feel the effects of ‘a little extra weight' on their pets. Pet owners can also register for the PetFit Challenge, pledging to help their pets live a longer, healthier life with the right amount of food and regular exercise.

Program highlights include a meet-and-greet for local bulldogs and their owners, followed by a ‘run with the bulls.' All dogs and owners in attendance are invited to join the bulldogs and run towards a healthier lifestyle. The Englewood Health Department will have a booth promoting the ‘Get Fight Englewood' Program. The Englewood Hospital will educate event-goers about their obesity prevention programs. The Flat Rock Brook Nature Association will also be talking about providing a healthy environment.

The Englewood Animal Hospital is a community based veterinary practice providing medical and surgical care to all family pets since 1946. The Hospital is committed to improving the health and well-being of our patient, their families and the community we all share.
