MESSAGE FROM BOARD OF EDUCATION PRESIDENTS
It is with profound sadness
that we inform you that John Grieco, Ed.D., age 63, passed away peacefully
at his home on Saturday, October 2, 2004. A resident of Teaneck, New Jersey,
Dr. Grieco leaves three devoted daughters, Joy, Charity and Andrea.
Dr. Grieco served as Chief School Administrator for Bergen County Technical
Schools (BCTS) since 1984, and Bergen County Special Services (BCSS) since
1995, when a collaboration brought the two county schools together. In
2002, BCTS entered into a unique partnership with the Englewood Board
of Education to a create a new magnet school program, Academies @ Englewood,
and provide administrative oversight of the entire Englewood School District.
Dr. Grieco earned his doctorate degree in Religion and Education from
Columbia University Teacher's College. He graduated from Manhattan College
with a M.A. in Religious Studies and an M.S. in Theoretical Physics. He
received a B.A. in Theoretical Physics from Catholic University of America.
Dr. Grieco began his career in education as a mathematics and science
teacher, while serving as a Christian Brother. He later worked for the
New Jersey Department of Education in the areas of adult, higher, and
vocational education. He joined Bergen County Technical Schools in 1979
as Director of Adult Education.
Among Dr. Grieco's many accomplishments was the initiation and development
of a technical high school to serve scientifically and technologically
talented secondary students. Recognized as a visionary educator at the
county, state and national levels, Dr. Grieco served on prestigious national
and state advisory groups associated with educational reform at the highest
levels, including the Coalition for Essential Schools and the nationally–based
research project, “High Schools of the Millennium.” His energy and commitment
to the school districts under his tutelage, especially to the children,
is without equal.
Dr. Grieco's commitment and educational leadership to staff and students
spans three unique school districts. Bergen Tech's Academy for the Advancement
of Science and Technology was founded in 1992, and became the model for
seven magnet high school programs in Hackensack, and a full time technical
high school in Teterboro that combine college-prep academic study with
a career focus. Bergen Tech's Paramus Campus has provided outstanding
vocational and career preparation for full and part-time students. Today,
Bergen County Technical Schools enrolls 2,400 secondary students and over
23,000 part time/full time adult students.
In 1995 Dr. Grieco assumed the superintendency of the Bergen County Special
Services, a highly specialized district serving the needs of over 1,200
persons with disabilities across several counties. Through Dr. Grieco's
leadership, this union of the Technical and Special Services School Districts
created many new opportunities for the residents of Bergen County and
northern New Jersey.
In September 2002, Bergen Tech, in a special partnership with the Englewood
Board of Education, used the same template to open the Academies @ Englewood
on the Dwight Morrow High School campus, and to infuse a new educational
model in Englewood's PreK–12 system, currently enrolling 3,000 students.
Under Dr. Grieco's leadership, a 5–year master plan for all of the Englewood
schools was designed and approved stabilizing administration and finance
within the district, implementing a technology infrastructure, and providing
consistent and coherent programs throughout the district.
