May 17, 2006 - Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County announced that it will be holding its annual Builder of the Year Award Dinner on June 15 th at 6:00 – 10:00pm at the Marriott Glenpointe in Teaneck . This year's ceremonies will honor Mayor Michael Wildes of Englewood and Lois Fein of Edgewater who have played important roles in the Habitat for Humanity projects in Englewood and Edgewater. Habitat Bergen is pleased to announce that Senator Frank Lautenberg is the Honorary Event Chair.

As Mayor of Englewood, Michael Wildes has played an important role in the groundbreaking for two new Habitat duplexes on Third Street in Englewood which will provide affordable housing for four deserving Bergen County families. “It is so important to have the support of local officials when undertaking a project of this scope,” said Habitat Bergen's President, Janine Getler. “Mayor Wildes has been an important part of bringing this project to fruition and continuing the work of Habitat in Bergen County .”

As the president of AHOME, Affordable Housing of Metropolitan Edgewater, Lois Fein has been instrumental in providing affordable housing in Edgewater to qualified families. Habitat Bergen has partnered with AHOME to refurbish 18 apartment units on Undercliff Avenue that will be offered back to the current residents as affordable owned housing. The new name of the association is Undercliff Heights Condominiums. By working together, AHOME and Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County are giving people a chance to be part of the American dream. “Lois Fein is an amazing person who has made a difference in the lives of Edgewater residents. Her commitment to eliminating inadequate housing is inspiring and we at Habitat Bergen are very grateful and thrilled to be working together with AHOME,” said Getler.

In addition to the Builder of the Year Awards, Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County will be presenting Golden Hammer Awards to the sponsors of their three recent Katrina “Home-In-A-Box” houses. In January and February 2006, Habitat Bergen collaborated with local individuals and organizations as part of the “Operation Home Delivery” program launched by Habitat for Humanity International to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. “We were so very fortunate to find individuals who were willing and able to give of themselves to help the victims of Katrina,” said Anna Monforth, Vice President of Habitat Bergen.

ABOUT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY of BERGEN COUNTY :

HfHBC, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is devoted to building affordable housing in Bergen County . Bergen County is an area of great affluence, with some of the highest housing costs in the nation. Yet 46,000 residents, over 15,000 of them children, live in poverty in this county.

Since 1993, 18 parents, over 30 children and one grandparent now own and live in eight homes built by volunteer labor and the sweat equity of the partner-families. We are about to break ground on two new duplexes on Third Street in Englewood , NJ . We are also partnering with Affordable Housing of Metropolitan Edgewater (AHOME) in the conversion of two apartment buildings which will provide 18 affordable condominiums.

Over 80% of all contributions to HfHBC go directly to construction. Ten percent of all donations are tithed internationally.
