| MacKay Park River Cleanup MacKay Park is a large, actively used park in the center of Englewood, which has recently been redesigned and upgraded to a first class recreation area. Facilities include playing fields, generous open lawns, a running track, comfort facilities, swimming pool, and a raised lanai, which serves as a platform for musical performances. The cleanup is expected to run from 9AM until 12 Noon on Saturday, August 28th. As always Hackensack Riverkeeper will provide refreshments and supplies (garbage bags, gloves, trash pick-up sticks, rakes and shovels) throughout the day and lunch after the work is done. You may be wondering how we can have a "river cleanup" in this city park. MacKay Park is flanked on both sides by two tributaries of Overpeck Creek (one of which boasted a sewerage works in the early 20 th Century) . As you know the Overpeck Creek runs south and joins the river in Ridgefield Park. Hackensack Riverkeeper Volunteers cleaned the lower section of the Overpeck Creek in July of this year. MacKay Park was established before 1912 and has provided open space to the people of Englewood for nearly 100 years. Overpeck Creek once had many tributaries flowing through Englewood but most have been culverted and now run underground. The creek itself has been channelized since before 1902. Unfortunately, the water is too shallow for boats of any kind, so our canoes will not be used for this cleanup. I'll bring all of our waders though !
