ATLANTIC CITY: Along with thousands of other municipal officials, Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes spent November 16-19, 2004 at the New Jersey League of Municipalities’ 89th Annual Conference in Atlantic City. This year’s theme was “Prosperity Through Partnerships”.

Mayor Wildes said, “The knowledge and energy of thousands of officials coming together is extraordinary for developing new ideas. Excellent opportunities for Englewood avail themselves when we adopt and adapt other cities’ successes.”

The New Jersey League of Municipalities is affiliated with the National League of Cities (NLC). At the event, Mayor Michael Wildes met Washington D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams. Mayor Williams is first vice president of the NLC and in line to become President of the organization in 2005. Mayor Wildes was pleasantly surprised to learn that Mayor Williams’ mother grew up in Englewood. Mayor Wildes said, “Besides being a very friendly, he definitely knew how he could best serve his constituents and his vision for doing so. On top of all that, he knew Englewood pretty well too. I was impressed.”

The event provided a valuable resource to help New Jersey’s officials better serve their constituencies. Delegates attended panels, clinics, workshops, and other sessions. Many exhibits displayed the latest products and services for municipal government. Some of the most important events included “Master Planning for the Aging Populations”, “Identifying Opportunities for Tourism in Your Community”, and “Building a Better Municipal Workforce”.

A full recap of Conference activities will be detailed in upcoming December and January issues of New Jersey Municipalities magazine.
