The Honorable Michael J. Wildes, Mayor of Englewood, is pleased to announce
that the American Red Cross, Bergen-Hudson Chapter is hosting a special
blood drive on February 25, 2005. He is the Honorary Chairman of this
blood drive. The blood drive will be held between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
at the American Red Cross Philibosian Training Center, located at 60 Grand
Avenue in Englewood.
The American Red Cross has a unique program for African-American donors
to combat the serious and painful condition, Sickle Cell Disease. This
is an inherited blood disorder that causes anemia, lung tissue and organ
damage as well as terrible pain. African-American participants can tag
their blood donations to offer them to match children coping with this
condition. It does not require more time or additional pints of blood
to donate to this program.
Donations can also be made in honor of the Bergen-Hudson Chapter’s
recent Chairman of the Board, John Uzzi. He has graciously discussed his
current battle with leukemia and the frequent need for transfusions of
platelets or whole blood used during chemotherapy to demonstrate the acute
need for blood donors.
Most healthy people who are at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds
or more are eligible to donate every 56 days. Donating takes about one
hour which includes completing a brief medical history. In Pennsylvania
and New Jersey, an average of 2,000 blood products is needed each day
in order to adequately treat patients.
To join Mayor Wildes and make an appointment for the Red Cross blood drive
on February 25th or to answer any question you may have, please call Mary
Buska at (201) 882-3748, or visit www.pleasegiveblood.org . Mayor Wildes
stated, “Your one pint of blood can assist up to three persons.
This is a remarkable gift that directly saves lives.”
